Anthelmintics
The problem
Anthelmintics are contentious inputs in livestock farming due to several factors. Their excretion in animal faeces can have negative environmental impacts on beneficial dung fauna. A major concern is the widespread development of anthelmintic resistance, making effective parasite control increasingly difficult. This resistance threatens sustainable animal production, especially in grazing systems where re-infection pressure is high. The use of anthelmintics can also upset the balance between worms and gut microbiota and have an impact on gut inflammation.
What SCALE-it does
We investigate management and feeding combinations to control gastrointestinal parasites. A decision support system for anthelmintic reduction in laying hens is refined. Tannin-rich bark extracts are being tested for their efficacy against parasites. We are also create European efficacy data for the newly registered biocontrol agent Duddingtonia flagrans (Bioworma®) in grazing ruminants.
Expected results
A tool (WormSCALE) for targeted helminth treatment in laying hens will be broadly accessible. The anthelmintic reduction toolbox will be complemented by feeding strategies and D. flagrans (Bioworma®), which will reach TRL9. A significant reduction in anthelmintic use compared to current standard practice is expected.
