Copper
The problem
Copper is used as a plant protection product and/or leaf fertiliser in organic as well as in conventional farming, but is problematic from an environmental perspective. European and national farmer-driven initiatives have – to some extent – promoted the development of copper reduction strategies for the most important crops: grapevine, fruit, vegetable and potato. The EU’s Farm to Fork strategy aims to reduce chemical plant protection products. These strategies typically consist of ‘smart’ combinations of alternative products such as acidified clay preparations, robust varieties and agricultural practices. What SCALE-it does
SCALE-it starts from the know-how developed under RELACS to further explore alternative solutions. Some alternatives to replace the use of copper in organic farming are tested on different commodities in different stages of the project. We are upscaling the production and formulation of promising plant-based and other natural products as copper replacements. These alternatives are tested in WP5 demonstration across various crops such as apple, vine, cucumber, tomato, olive, potato, carrot, and basil. We also develop management and cultivation techniques and robust varieties.
Expected results
At least 7 copper alternatives will be developed to Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7-9. We expect significant reduction in copper consumption per hectare, for example, an average reduction of 30% in grapevines and 20% in apples, without compromising yield.
